Salsalicious had always wanted to dance but was never exposed to Latin music. The turnaround came one day while driving down the street and she noticed a sign that said “Walk in…Waltz out- Only 25 dollars".
She met the owner of this dance studio who started teaching her and quickly her heart was taken away by the dance. The sound of Latin music melted her and from that day her life was to change. Now she knew what it was that she had been missing all her life. She started hunting down places where she could listen and dance to Latin music. The first place she found was Berlin's, on Yonge Street in Toronto. When she saw the fine dancers there she was shocked beyond belief. One of them asked her to dance salsa, but she only knew Mambo on the 2 and he danced on the 1. Eventually but not easily she surrendered to the feeling of Salsa on 1. During her outings at Berlin's she met her first real dance partner who taught her salsa and she began teaching and performing with him. Now, 10 years later, in 2005, Salsalicious has become very serious about her dancing and has travelled the world studying dance in hot spots like Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Montreal, Moscow, Russia, and Vancouver. She loves dancing and is always dedicated to learning and conquering new and exciting moves. She enjoys teaching her students and wants them to be the best they can be. In 2003 she teamed up with salsero Arturo from Toronto and together they now run the popular Salsa Wednesdays at Copper Lounge. And with their "We've Got the Beat" studio they now return to Casablanca's Salsa Fridays. Salsalicious is also a promoter and has tight connections with the Latin dance community in Hamilton. She is also the leader of the one & only Hamilton Salsa Team. She is indeed a very stylish and sexy dancer to watch or dance with. ![]()
Arturo first got exposed to Latin dancing in 1995 when a friend took him to the then famous Berlin's Tuesdays in Toronto. A loose-limbed traveller who truly appreciates music, he was immediately intoxicated by the lively trumpets of the merengue bands and the sexy rhythms of the salsa beats.
After 6 months of drop-in lessons and little progress under the latin instructor, he left his friends and registered solo onto another 6-month course at the now-defunct La Classique. Alas! This other latin instructor had long decided to place all his attention on the beautifully ladies, which made it doubly hard for our male protagonist to learn, let alone practise, the leading. Discouraged & defeated, Arturo decided not to take another class again. For the next year & a half he would visit scores of salsa clubs in Toronto, but sadly never to dance as much as just to watch and admire from the sidelines. Then his luck struck again. His same friend told him about a dance studio on King St Toronto and he wanted him to check out the Polish instructor there. Polish??! You're kidding, right? But before he knew it, Arturo was taking all the classes he could with this impressive new teacher. Visiting the studio 2-3 times a week, his knowledge in salsa, cha-cha & ballroom grew tenfold after a year. It is interesting to note that even at this point he had not set foot once on the dance floor in a salsa club. This would all change when 2 of his girlfriends came down from Quebec and stayed with him for 1 week. That week proved to be the turning point of his dance career. For 5 nights in a row, he took the girls to a different salsa joint every evening, and for the first time he danced like a "loco".... After that week, there was just no looking back. If Arturo wasn't at work, he could only be in a salsa club..... In 2000 Arturo joined the prestigious United Salseros in Toronto under the tutelage of Teddy Olaso, and taught and showcased with them until early 2004. During that time, he taught & trained hundreds of students on the proper technique of dancing salsa. He continued to improve himself and has danced his way from Montreal, New York to Spain and Bermuda. He has also trekked through salsa clubs all across Latin America, and has just recently returned from Argentina, where he picked up Tango as well in the evening and then danced salsa till dawn. In 2003 he established "We've Got the Beat" dance studio with Salsalicious, focusing on teaching leading & following which has become such an important element in their workshops and Salsa Wednesdays group classes. Arturo's objective is get anybody at all to be able to dance by employing the correct technique - no matter who you are - by learning "to move" instead of learning "moves". Nonetheless, he has performed in Toronto and Bermuda, and choreographs for the Hamilton Salsa Team with Salsalicious. This summer they will be running beginner & intermediate salsa workshops. As well he plans to teach Tango in Hamilton in the near future.... Arturo also loves to follow, and has been told more than once that he follows better than the average girl. He fondly remembers his dances with the famous Edie the Salsa Freak from L.A., when she led him through some of his best dancing. So if you girls know how to lead, ask him to follow!! |
